DISABLING UNNECESSARY WINDOWS SERVICES
There are a number of windows services that load up at the startup, some being critical and some useless to many. Disabling these unnecessary services will help faster bootup and will save some precious RAM space.
Go to Run in start menu and type services.msc
this will open a list of windows services.
To disable any service just double click on that and first Stop the service and then Disable from Startup Type.
Before disabling any services fully understand its functionality as stopping a system critical service will create a greater headache.
Here are some services that you might Prefer Disabling
1. Automatic Updates : used to download and install updates from microsoft. After disabling you can download updates manually
2.Computer Browser: Nah! this ain't any internet browser. it is used to browse other computers in LAN. so if you don't have LAN, you can disable this Service
3.Error Reporting Service: This service notifies microsoft about the Errors and crashes. Its sometimes Irritating so It can be disabled
4.Help and Support: Help and support of windows.
5.HTTP SSL: allows the personal web server built into windows XP to provide secure data transfer over HTTP. since most people never even set up personal web server on windows XP it is rarely used. It can be disabled.
6.Messenger: Its not MSN messenger. it is used to send messages to the computers on LAN. So if you don't have LAN it can be disabled
7.Print Spooler: if you don't use printer this service can be disabled
8.Server: if you don't share your files over network it can be disabled
9.System Restore: if you don't use this feature you can disable it.
10.TCP/IP NetBIOS helper: If you don't need NetBios to share file over network this can be disabled
11.Terminal services: this feature is used by remote assistance. if you don't use remote assistance you may opt to disable it.
12.Windows Firewall/Internet connection sharing (ICS): if you already have any other personal firewall, you can disable this feature
13.Windows Image Acquisition WIA: used to get data from optical devices like camera and scanners.
14.Remote registry: this service allows the user to edit the registry remotely. this can be disabled
